The scientists took out cells from the heart of a rat and they made a layer of muscle on a sheet. The mass often is used – polydimethylsiloxane substance. This layer of muscle looks similar to that of a jellyfish. The sheet of muscle when exposed to electric field contracts and pulses like an original jellyfish. The electric current makes the sheet contract creating the impression that it is swimming like that of a jellyfish.

The Mechanisms Used In This Replication

The replication of this artificial jellyfish by the scientist was through genetic manipulations of cells. The scientists took many years in understanding and researching how the body of the jellyfish contracts. They had to understand the arrangement of the muscle of the jellyfish, the fluid dynamics, and their body coiling ability. The scientists used silicon to make the patterned sheet on which they placed the layer of cells from the heart of the rat. The heart muscles of the rat grew to make the swimming muscle of the jellyfish. And then they provided an electric current which made the swimming muscle contract. Just like an original jellyfish the artificial jellyfish pumps out water while swimming.
