Our planet is filled with wonders and wonderful beings. Starting from mountains, lands, and forests to deep under the waters, each and every corner of the world is inhabited by beings that never cease to surprise us. Flying fishes is one among them. They are one of the most marvelous creations of nature. This type of fish belongs to the family of Exocoetidae in the order of bony fish Atheriniformes. They are also closely related to the categories of halfbeaks, sauries and needlefish. Moreover, Flying Fishes are mainly characterized by soft fins and a caudal fin with a smaller upper lobe. They usually have large pectoral fins and they function as their wings. Therefore, they help them to easily glide through the air.
Moreover, they can remain in the air for 30 seconds before returning to the water and can achieve a speed of about 64km/hr due to the rapid vibration and movement of the tail. The tail of the fish enters the water first and it enables the fish to go for a second thrust because of the swift movement produced by the tail. It is also estimated that the tail can vibrate at a speed of 50 times per second. They often fall prey to predatory birds.
Flying fish are of different kinds. Some of them are:
Atlantic Flying Fishes, Or Cypselurus heterurus
This particular species has a body that is shaped like a tube. It also has a long tail fin and large pectoral fins that help it to glide above the water. However, it does not fly like birds and jumps three feet above the water and uses its fins to hold steady in the air against the strong currents. The Atlantic flying fish can grow really long, as much as fifteen inches. Moreover, they mostly live close to the surface of the ocean water and are usually spotted along the eastern coasts of the USA to the Gulf of Mexico. The female fish lays eggs in a bed of seaweed under the water. They do not tend the eggs and the young ones are left to fend for themselves.
Sailfin Flying Fishes, Or Parexocoetus brachypterus
This type of fish is popularly known as two-winged flying fishes. They have the ability to jump out of the water using their hypertrophied fins in order to escape the underwater predators. Moreover, they have small pectoral fins and a long dorsal fin compared to the other flying fish. Its blunt snout is one of the distinct physical features. They distribute along the coastal and sub-coastal waters. Therefore, their location mostly in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. The Sailfin flying fish are eaten by locals in Taiwan and are also used as bait.
