A fishing rod comes down to the components. The blank is the main component and steers what a rod can become. There are two kinds of blanks, Fiberglass, and carbon fiber. Fiberglass is more durable, and cheaper, yet it also dampens more and tends to weigh more. Carbon fiber blanks are More sensitive, and lighter, but tend to be more expensive, and delicate. Both carbon fiber and Fiberglass come in several qualities and actions. Higher conditions tend to be more sensitive and or heavier duty, and frankly, between all the grades and activities, there is a lot of overlap. But there is a desired action and size/weight of blank for every kind of fishing you could want to do.

Know Abot A Fishing Rod And Its Types

Then there are the guides. There are several options on guides everything from single wire guides used on a fly rod, to be lightweight, to roller guides that are useful to protect the line and prevent heat build-up when under more substantial pressure and friction. Guides come in several materials, from ceramics to titanium to aluminum oxides and other metals. Typically higher quality guides are in requirement for more massive duty tackle and when you are fishing densely braided spectra, as the line can cut grooves in cheap guides. The guides are typically selected to match the style of fishing desired, and usually, a good quality rod will have 6–8 guides for tackle fishing and 8–11 guides for a fly rod.

Lastly, the handle must also match the type of fishing intended to be done. There is a fly fishing style, a Bait cast, a spinning, and a deckhand style of handles. Again the handle style should match the style of fishing or method of real attachment desired.

Uses Of These Rods

All or at least most fishing rods are to design with a specific task or function in mind.

The roles they are to design for are various, but their primary purpose and functions are to cast baits or lures.

In general, the following could apply.

Rods of 12 feet or more in length can be in the description as surf or beach rods, these rods usually have a ‘ slow to medium taper’ and are designed to cast 2–4 oz weights long distances, needed to reach gutters adjacent to beaches.

Spinning rods can be in the 7–10-foot range and can be built with multiple tapers, usually in fast to very fast tapers. These types of rods are generally useful for lure or plug casting or the purpose of high-speed spinning. They can also be useful for ‘ live baiting. ‘

Game fishing rods are typically in the 5–7’ range and are built explicitly with heavy tackle and target fish in mind. They are not to design for casting as such but generally are used for trolling lures or baits or in ‘ standup’ style of game fishing. They are heavily designed types of fishing rods with robust components and slow tapers.

Spinning rods can be classified as either ‘ threadline’ Spinning rods or bait casting rods.
