As carps are quite versatile, they can adjust more with nature than some other species. This nature makes it possible for them to survive, even in highly degraded areas. Though they are freshwater fish, they can adjust to the natural changes and adapt them with time. The past few decades have been the long years of Carp’s spreading across most of the south-eastern Australian countries. Therefore, in some areas, they considered as one of the most abundant large freshwater fish. A perfect example of this can be the Murray-Darling Basin. Description & Biology

Belonging to the Cyprinidae family, Carp is a fish with distinct features, just like the goldfish. They are sometimes confused as the goldfish, and especially the small-sized carp fish get confused as goldfish. A pair of barbells or whiskers is the biological trait that distinguishes them from the goldfish and other species. One can identify them by their barbells, which located at each corner of their mouths. Small eyes and thick lips are two facial features of this fish. Some of the biological features are its forked tail and a single dorsal fin attached to the strongly serrated spines. The scales of Carp are always quite large and thick in nature.

In Short, the body color of this species varies, and mostly the range varies from olive green to bronze or silver in color. Koi or the Japanese Carp are popular worldwide to have more variety of colors. You will be amazed to see the Koi with multiple layers of white, black, red, yellow, blue, and orange markings. Scales also vary in these fishes, and sometimes, you will see no scale at all, though that’s the most exceptional case. All these variations and common traits hail from one family of fish, which termed Cyprinus carpio. This family of fishes loves to flow into the waters at low altitudes slowly. They mature early, and it takes only one to two years for them to develop properly. Like every other species, they produce a large number of sticky eggs as they mature.
